History of congkak in Thailand

Congkak is believed to origination from word ‘congak’ in old Malays spoken language which mean calculate. This is because this game demands the player to be able to ‘count’ & somebody who is effective in mathematic may create certain profit in this game.

It is said that this game took place since the Malacca Kingdom in which it has spread through numerous country in south east asia region. This is because this kingdom happen to be the main city for business in the period of their prime time.

There is no evidence how it spread to Thailand

In early days it is believed that this game is for the king family and the palace resident, nevertheless later on it disperse to the people around the kingdom.

If we learn the Congkak which is the wood carve, we will learn that it is similar to a boat. It is said that this game was start by a fisherman. Based on the legend, this fisherman not able to go to the sea during raining season and he loss his income during this time. To prevent him from become very bored, he have create this game which is similar to his boat.
